Artistic Funk…

was horrible.   It made me feel lost, sad and ungrateful.  I felt lost because I have lived and breathed it for so many years and now nothing.  Sad because my heart craved it, but my mind and body will not be forced to cooperate. Ungrateful, because I have every medium known to man kind and more paper than I will ever use in my life and it sat there untouched.

I decided to take an active approach, so I could nip this thing and face it head on.  I went to the library and checked out some books on creativity.  The high points and thoughts from my research were:

Find my muse.  Yeah…Find my muse?  Muse- ok  that just means  my inspiration.  What usually inspires me to draw and paint?  Got it!  Mad, sad, happy, glad, bored, busy, tired, hungry and full. Pretty much anytime was usually the right time.   Next, what do I draw or paint?   I draw animals which is mostly dogs and cats, and I have been dabbling in landscapes, but I don’t paint much of anything.  Last, what would I like to draw or paint?  I have no idea.

Keep ideas on index cards.  I thought that this technique was for writers.  But hey, what do I know.  They wrote the book, it got published.  I deemed it worthy of checking out so I grabbed some of my daughter’s cards and stashed a few around to jot down ideas.  I can’t tell you how helpful that was.  I used them as grocery lists and scrap paper.

Find my voice.  I still haven’t figured that one out… They may be talking about style? But that is just as vague to me as finding my voice.

Change Mediums.  Well, that may work.   I don’t paint very much and I have all those acrylics, watercolors, and gouache going to waste.

Relax.  Are you kidding me?  I’m as relaxed as person can be without prescription.

I thought most of these ideas completely ridiculous taken individually until I stumbled across this:

The desire to create knows not good or bad and it ignores technique and critique, it just is. -me

I wrote this quote as part of my personal New Year’s resolution.  And boy am I letting myself down.  A person should not have to remind themselves to have fun.  But tucked away in my hot pink binder, I did in fact do that.  And I have ignored it completely. Now the book isn’t quite as stupid as I thought because even though it wasn’t on a note card, it was on a scrap of paper.   The muse is finding inspiration in the boring and mundane.  Relaxing is to play like a child.  A child never erases because they never mess up.  Everything is a work of art and they delight in the experience.  They don’t care about complementary  or tertiary colors. And they don’t care about a value scale.  They don’t worry about blogging, etsying, or bitsying  unless we are talking spiders.   And my life is a change of mediums..Mom, Wife, Woman and Person.

And come to find out I have been creating.  I have been sewing, cooking, decorating, creating memories, even created a couple of decorative abstracts, drew a dog, quite a few zentangles and now creating worry.  lol…  A pencil and a brush is not all life has offer, yet some how I convinced myself otherwise.  I’ve been so narrow-minded and now I feel very foolish.

I am sharing this embarrassing moment with the hope that you will not fall into the same trap that I did.  And if you are going through something similiar…Remember, life itself is art and creativity, the rest is just icing on the cake and will come when it comes.

After all, we are all works in progress.

Zentangle 6-2-11

Yep another Zentangle, which means no real artwork from me.  I am working on another portrait, but I haven’t finished it yet.  It’s a little out of my comfort zone. So it possibly end up as something pretty cool or it could tank.  That’s why I don’t post a lot of W.I.P.  because it could very well end up being W.I.T.  (work in trash)

We just got back from spending the long weekend holiday at Emerald Isle, North Carolina.  We had a pretty good time. Except right now, I feel like I have been sitting on the a stove eye nekked.  OUCH!  My whole backside is burnt extra crispy.  It makes me so mad.  David and I had said on the way down that we were going to sunscreen…sunscreen….sunscreen.  And I did using a 45, and I still managed to burn.  I guess I just stayed out on the beach too long.  Next time, I’m taking 80 sunblock!  But I still managed to have lots of fun.

Now it’s back to the real world.  David is Florida for work and it’s just me and Alana. So, I’m going to end this post and do some drawing before she gets home from school:)

Full of Wisdom…

This is the first time that I have ever seen an animal in picture or in real life  that actually looked wise to me, very Yoda(ish).  This dog looks like he or she has seen it all.

I had a terrible time with the nose and the long hair coming out of  (his or her) ears.  But I think it turned out pretty good, I like it.  And it felt good to draw, it’s been awhile since I have scratched out a puppy or atleast a puppy at heart…

YAY!

The pictures above are from the Arts and Crafts show that we held on Saturday.  The show was at the clubhouse in the retirement community of Yorktown Villas.  Talking with these people you’d never know it!  They kind of reminded me of the Golden Girls:)  They were such lovely people and so very kind and gracious that they made me feel instantly at ease.  With all the warm cookies that we were served who wouldn’t feel at ease.   The sales went far beyond what I expected, I was able to get a few commissions and I am just over the moon with excitement!   My friend did really well too.  She almost sold out all of her flower arrangements and sold some of her art as well.  So, it was a good day for both of us.  The best part was that at the end of the day, we got to trade art from each other and that was awesome!

Well, since this has consumed my every waking moment for the last 2.5 months, I don’t have anything else to share, but I hope to very soon.  Until then, I’m wishing  you sunny skies and warm weather:)

Zentangle….

Hello, Long time no post, huh… For the last week or so, I have been making prints of my drawings.  Not an easy task, but I think I did a fairly good job of it.  I sent the  color work to my Dad’s shop  and my SIL is making the color prints for me as well as my business cards, brochures and even some presentation stuff.  It’s so great to come from a family of printers…hee, hee and I am so grateful for their help..Because it would have cost me a fortune that I didn’t have.  In return, I promised  to show them how to Zentangle.  But I will also make them little Zen-Art packets that they can take home.  I hope they will be pleased.

Also, I just wanted to let you in on a great offer.  I subscribe to the Strathmore newsletter. It’s an awesome newsletter.  Annnyway, they are offering FOR FREE a visual journal workshop series and if you want to sign up (click here) .  They give you a supply list and everything.  Now, don’t plan on seeing any of my journal here, but I may surprise you:)  If I get really brave.

I turned 3 and I missed it again!

I can definitely call this drawing a success.  Needs a title though.  I really don’t title my artwork.  Everybody else does and maybe I should, but I’m not not good at that sorta thing.  Got any ideas?  Many times I wanted to throw this drawing in the trash, so would draw tiny bits at a time and then I would stop. The values were just all other the place and I had a hard time mapping them out. Ten minutes into the drawing and I was lost.   I muttled through and this has ended up being  the absolute favorite of  my drawings so far (until I draw something else). The drawing has a lot of elements that would be in a landscape such as: wood, grass and rocks along with brinks, concrete and metal.   So, I think I’m ready to try a barn scene but we”ll see.

I can’t believe I keep missing the anniversary of my blog!  I guess I will celebrate it now, Sooo,  Yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!  Thanks a bunch for your support these last three years,  it really means a lot to me and I look forward to many more:)

Doggie…

I found this partially drawn portrait when I was cleaning out some papers in my office.  I wondered why I let this perfectly good drawing go to waste and decided to finish it.   I think I chose the photo because of its paws.  I draw the head and neck most of the time, and probably thought that this would be good practice.  This isn’t one of my favorite drawings, but I love those paws!

W.I.P.

This is a little sneak peek of a drawing that I’ve been working on.  The piece is mainly composed of brick and wood, so it’s going to take a while to finish.  I love drawing the wood, but the brick is a little difficult and is still in the rough stages.

I also, wanted to let you know that I had to cancel my website.  I know that when marketing art especially pet portraits word of mouth is 99.9999999% of the business.  I know from time to time you may luck out and receive some online business, but not usually.  So, in knowing all of this ahead of time,  I feel like I was pretty realistic with my expectations of  a website.  What I expected  was to have a place to have my work viewed and place for transactions to take place at a trusted site with my terms and conditions outlined.    Simple huh?

One evening, I decided checked my traffic. I’d never checked my traffic before and Iwas curious. So I logged on and  No traffic…None at all!  Zilch!  I was thinking all kinds of unkind things. So David being the logical man he is said, “Well, Let’s just look it up and see?”  So we did a search for my website and we couldn’t find it, we actually got tired of looking for it.  The only way the site would come up is if we typed the address in.   I was beyond ticked off, and if you remember an  unexplained tremor in your house…that was me!

So, I paid my monthly fees (which are not cheap by the way) for my website to be lost in the oblivion.  I realize you have to pay to play, that there are fees that are extra to move yourself up in the search, but this was too ridiculous.    I guess  I was expecting too much from my service.

So, after alot of consideration and whining about how unfair things are (I hate injustice)  I created a web-blog site.  I was able to include everything that was on my website and I think it looks pretty good.  My new pet portrait email address is pencilpetportraits (at)gmail(dot)com and my new web-blog is : drawyourpet.blogspot.com .   I will have a sales-web-blog for the fine art (at some point) .  I would have used WordPress, but you can’t advertise directly from your blog, you can link but that’s about it.   I just hope I can keep up with all these blogs:)  I think this will be perfect for what I need for now.

I guess that’s all I have to share today.    I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Mosaic Flop…

To start my New Year’s resolution,  I checked out a book from the library called Perfect Paper Mosaics by Susan Seymour.  She’s awesome, by the way!  And being afraid to bite off too much, I wanted to try a small simple inexpensive project and thank goodness for that because I put this project right up there with paying bills!  I bought a cardboard box from Michael’s for a couple of  bucks (spray painted it black) and a poster board for .49, so I really don’t have anything invested (thank goodness) because this flopped! As you can tell I couldn’t even muster up enough enthusiasm to finish. It just looks bad…..so very bad…

At the start,  I used spray adhesive on the front side of a black poster and the back side of my shiny decorative paper, put them together and used a brayer to get out the air bubbles.  After that dried,  I marked off 1/4 x 1/2 in. cutting grid on the back side off the poster.  I cut the tiles by hand using a metal ruler and a wallpaper knife.  It look good as I was cutting, but as I was gluing the pieces to the box it became the beginning of the end.  The pieces weren’t even by tile or row.  So, I had to stop.

If I really want to complete a paper mosaic, I will have to invest in a rotary system that has a cutting mat as well as a slotted cutting grid that is made for sewing and quilting.  If I wasn’t planning on making curtains for the house or a desire to refashion clothes.  I wouldn’t even bother.  The system could get pretty pricey, but I’m seriously considering it.  So, there still maybe be a project in me yet.  I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but for now I’m moving on.
