Hello! I hope this finds you in good health and spirit. Things here are plugging right along and everyone is doing well. Not much to write about really, just working and hanging out at the house. I long for the days when things go back to normal (Well, as normal as our normal can be) as I am sure we all are.

On to the painting.
This little girl was quite a stretch for me, being that it quite a large portrait. I love how she turned out. Yes, her eyes are that big, lol and that little side eye she is giving just makes my heart melt. My clients loved the painting and it was honor to paint this memorial to their very loved and precious member of the family.

Happy Sunday! This was my first attempt in painting a dog in acrylic. I had chosen this picture because of the superhero pose not really paying attention to the fact that painting a white and black dog would be hard to pull off. Black and white is an inclusion of reflective colors that bounce off the fur from their surroundings mostly and bits of black and white mixed in as low lights and highlights. This pup had a lot of creams and flesh tones in the white but only brown and gray in the black from what I could see. The reference picture was lovely and the photographer really knows her stuff. I was drawn to the photo so I just painted what I saw. I did remove the background, so the dog would really pop. And he/she does.

I painted the portrait on an 8 x 10 linen canvas. I found it extremely difficult to get the softness of the fur and the sharpness of the fine whiskers. Paint would gather or drag on the squared tooth of canvas. If I was working on a large scale it probably would not have been a big deal, but on a small scale? I had lots of issues and many attempts.

Next time, I will either paint on a wood board or prime the tooth out of the canvas for a smooth foundation.

What I liked is that I left everything out, so when I could grab a few minutes, I would paint for a bit. I know I had posted this before but I keep forgetting. I also have another painting to get started and a drawing on the board. I want to get one more painting ready to start, so I can have 3 things going…I will see how it goes. I promise series, but don’t follow through because after I get one thing finished I want to move on to something different, whether it be subject or medium. So we will will see.

This is from my watercolor sketch book. I tried to paint a little project in watercolor. Of course the reference I chose was way too complicated for me so it didn’t take long for me to mess it up. But I was able to turn lemons into lemonade on this one and painted a mini session of Monet’s Lily Pond. I really like how it turned out. It was also pleasing to find out the the watercolor pad has some pretty durable paper. If I mess up, I can just paint acrylic over the screw up and PRESTO! No one is the wiser…Unless you spill the beans in a blog post, lol

Have you ever completed a painting from the old Masters? I highly recommend it…For me, it was a true pleasure!

Happy New Year


The picture above is from the Art Show.   I won’t go into detail, but you can read about it here.  It was something else and I saw pieces that  had me speechless!

But enough about that.

I always look forward to the start of a New Year and 2017 is no different.  I guess it’s because it feels like a fresh start or it could be a do over.  And I take Day One of the New  Year very seriously…and by seriously, I mean resolutions.

It’s been a challenging year.  Some things great and  some things stretched me so far out of my comfort zone that I was physically uncomfortable.   But whether the things that I was resolved to accomplish came to fruition or a complete disaster, I did it.

For myself and to make myself accountable I write everything down old school.  There is just something satisfying keeping that crisp piece of paper with me in January and by December that crisp piece of paper has softened  with wear and a full of crossed off goals. Frankly, it doesn’t get any better!

I know I have talked about this before, but its worth another post.  Because submitting my work to a curator was big on my list last year and as I write this my work is hanging in gallery  now.  I didn’t win anything, but that wasn’t my goal.  My goal  was to submit a piece of art  and it happened because that goal was always in my face.

So if you want things to happen, make them happen by making those resolutions and hold yourself accountable.

I am looking forward to 2017 and I hope it will be a great year for you too!

This little panel took me a while, but so worth it!  I find that I really enjoy painting owls.  I think it’s the eyes that I love painting….yep…its the eyes in any subject that I love and in any medium and these stare a hole right through, lol

And I have some exciting news!!!!

 I have been invited to submit this owl in the Miniatures and Small Works by Tidewater Artists show at Charles H. Taylor Arts Center.  I am really excited and I really don’t know what to expect, but come December I will be there 🙂

On a side note:

The palette from this POST worked like a charm.  The paint remained wet for the entire painting process!!!!  It is so worth the money!  But I do have a little warning:  Do not shake the palette or the paint colors will run in to each other, lol

Hello!

     It has been so long since I have blogged that I don’t know where to start….So, I guess I will begin with the painting.

     This fluffy friend has been on my board since October and it finally completed and sold!  To be fair, I stopped and  put it away a lot but I didn’t struggle getting this completed which is very unusual for me, huh?

     This subject and on this scale is perfect for beginning acrylic artists, because it is basically two circles and a triangle. Give it a go!

Where I’ve been?

    I got a job in October and quit said job in January, lol.  I just didn’t like it.  So, I decided to go to Real Estate School.  Then, after studying for a trillion hours I passed my State and National exam!!!! Now, I am with a Company and waiting for my license so I can get this ball rolling.

   Everything has gotten so chaotic that it has been hard to find time for art.  But I hope things will get back to normal soon.  Take Care!
